Trial by Charm is the first book in the Charmed Trials Series by Jolene Buchheit and tells the story of Julia, who simply does not understand why all of her friends are always so interested in boys. To her, they are boring and a waste of time. There are so many more interesting things to do in life than fan-girling over a boy's abs. It all changes when Julia has to become a helper for the male swimming team after she had been caught violating one of the rules of her school. She has to deal with a boy called Vander all the time, and she is the only girl who is not smitten with him. Vander does not understand this because he is not like other boys and can charm virtually anyone - until Julia turned up in his life. Unfortunately, his heritage also comes with certain dangers, and the fact that Julia can resist his charms makes him wonder. Soon, Julia and Vander need to team up and overcome their "hatred" of each other. But what will Julia say once she finds out who Vander really is?
Jolene Buchheit mainly targets younger readers with Trial by Charm, but that did not lessen my enjoyment of the story. Sometimes, as an adult, it is nice to revisit your own youth by delving into young adult books. I enjoyed this story a lot because it combines the energy of a young adult story with some mythology - and it's a well done, believable mix. The characters are very likable and I enjoyed following Julia through her adventures and misadventures. Readers will surely enjoy the interactions between the main characters and will also fall in love with the supporting cast. It is a lovely adventure that can be finished in just a few sittings, simply because it's hard to stop reading once you get into the story.
