Marie Story found her career path in a rather unconventional way. Born and raised as a third-culture kid in Asia, Africa, and Central America, she was exposed to incredible international beauty, culture, and art from a very young age. Instead of taking the traditional educational route, she spent several years in apprenticeships under professional illustrators and designers around the world. Each one contributed something unique, and her work is a reflection of many individual influences.
Today, she writes and illustrates books from her home in San Antonio, Texas. She lives with her husband (author Peter J Story) and two very adventurous pugs named Pup and Kip.

Travelling through Tokyo is the second book in the Pug with a Passport series, written and illustrated by Marie Story. Kipling Pug visits his friend, Taiki, in Tokyo, Japan. With more than 31 million people living in Tokyo, it is the most crowded city in the world. Many live in high-rise apartments, but Taiki lives in a house with sliding wooden doors with paper. Shoes come off before entering the house, and furniture is minimal, with meals eaten with chopsticks while sitting on the floor. Japanese people sleep on futons, which are also placed on the floor. After seeing the wondrous and magnificent sites, Kipling Pug returns home after having learned a new language, eaten new foods, having had many exciting adventures and purchasing souvenirs, giving him fond memories of his trip to Tokyo.
I was thrilled to read Marie Story’s second pug adventure, Travelling through Tokyo, starring Kipling Pug. Geared towards younger readers, Kipling’s amazing overseas journey to the Orient is quite remarkable. Not only does he immerse himself in a completely different way of life, but he also embraces the culture and is not afraid to try new things. I was astounded at the useful facts learned through reading this particular text, especially as I have friends who live in Japan and had no idea that their way of life was so different to mine. Marie Story covers everything from high-speed bullet trains to vending machines and street festivals, while taking the reader on an incredible tour of the beautiful country of Japan. Having only been to the airport in Japan once (on stopover), my knowledge of the country, until now, extended only to the trains which transport you from your arrival gate to your next departure gate. I enjoyed reading about the Japanese lifestyle and find myself thirsting for more information about this remarkable country. Not only do I recommend Travelling through Tokyo to children, but also to adults who are considering visiting this picturesque locale, with an incredible and unique flavor all of its own.
