Parenthood comes with so many responsibilities and decisions that, as a parent, you can only hope you are doing the best for your child. Transister by Kate Brookes is an emotional yet inspiring journey of a family raising a transgender child. Kate gives birth to two bouncing twin boys who are typically opposites. Jacob was quiet, while Gideon was all over the place and often agitated. Not long afterward, the parents discovered that both children had sensory dysfunction. They received occupational, speech, and physical therapy, which was of great help. Apart from that, Kate notices Gideon is more inclined toward girls' stuff: hair, dress, and even Barbie toys. With time, the pressure builds. Gideon begins wearing his mother's heels, shops for dresses, is often in girls' company, and identifies with a girl's name. On the other side, Joshua does not budge at the idea, and the whole event seems to take a toll on him. Would he ever accept that Gideon identified as Gabriella? How does society respond to Gabriella's transition? Will Gabriella and her family finally become happy and content?
Transister by Kate Brookes is a real-life example that reflects society and the emotional turmoil that a family of a gender-nonconforming child goes through. There is confusion about how to handle the situation, what to say, and how society views them. Attending support groups and therapies are among the ways to help smooth the way as the participants learn to accept and understand their bodies. At the same time, their family members also learn to accept and understand what is happening with their loved ones. As young as Gideon was, his courage to reveal his true identity to others is a significant milestone that will empower any transgender child or adult to live their truth as they learn they are not alone. Transister will be greatly appreciated by parents and friends who have a transgender relative since it will educate them on the importance of supporting and accepting each other's uniqueness.
