I liked Tower of the Arkein. I liked it a lot. There is a lot of first class world building and I always appreciate that. It takes a lot of research, effort, and patience, but it pays off. There are a lot of higher purposes being played out in Tower of the Arkein, but these higher stories are told in the familiar stories of men and women seeking their own satisfaction as they seek revenge, love, and justice in their own lives. This makes it real. This makes it intense. This makes it personal. Fantasy fiction doesn't get much better than this and I tip my hat to Chase Blackwood. He has done a great job and deserves all the financial success and critical acclaim of any good writer who has taken the time to create a great book.
There are a lot of characters to love and hate in Tower of the Arkein, but my favorite is Aeden. He is a slave. He is a warrior. But he is also an incredibly complex man who is in a position where he is pitting his wits against other incredibly bright thinkers. He is a great fighter, but if he doesn't think out his every move, his fighting skills alone will never enable him to achieve his goals. Chase Blackwood has created a great, complex character, still trying to maintain his humanity, though his life is awash with blood. The plot is complex, with complex characters to move it. The setting is awesome and the writing is good. This is great fantasy.
