There Go I is a short story collection by Bill VanPatten. The book opens with the titular tale "There Go I," where a man observes a cantankerous old woman at a grocery store who reminds him of his childhood abuse. "Leaving" is the story of a forty-one-year-old astrophysicist diagnosed with terminal cancer who plans one final act of revenge over his adulterous husband. "Malcontent" follows an author who is forced to look back at his love life after an interview with a young journalist. "Dawn" follows a ten-year-old girl who stands up for who she is in front of an ignorant woman. On a foggy Christmas night, a man is plagued by memories of his dysfunctional childhood in "Noche Buena." In "Home," a man returns to his hometown to attend his mother's funeral, only for his dreadful past to surface unexpectedly.
There Go I is a collection of introspective short stories that give you much to ponder. Bill VanPatten tells some fascinating tales that showcase the complex myriad of emotions and behaviors that shape the course of our human lives. There is a sense of a personal touch to each of these tales that, when combined with VanPatten's intimate writing style, creates a body of work that is thoroughly riveting to read. This is because the characters feel like people you may have met in real life. I enjoyed the book and if you love reading short stories, I can't recommend it enough.
