The Wonders of the Peculiar Parasol by Mark M. Even is a children’s book that will appeal to kids who love magic and sci-fi stories. It begins with Mandy’s mom driving her over to Grandma’s house. It was her cousin Mickey’s birthday the past week, and she had a gift for him. Gina, her other favorite cousin, would be there, making the rendezvous a lot of fun. From Grandma’s home, they all went to their beloved Great-grandma Gigi's place. At Gigi’s house, the three children started a game of "hide and seek." Gina who hid in the attic fell out of her hiding place along with a parasol. Mandy picked up the parasol and the most daunting adventure of her life began. The parasol contained some magic that could bring Mandy’s family together or tear them apart.
The Wonders of the Peculiar Parasol by Mark M. Even is best recommended for children between the ages of eight to fifteen years. This book was a very interesting read, which I’ll liken to Pandora's box. Each story left me with a tangible and applicable lesson. The book portrayed elements such as bravery, deceit, envy, selfishness, and the consequences of dishonesty. I loved the simple yet effective vocabulary and writing style used in this book. It felt like smart kids were conversing. I also applaud Mark for ensuring that the editing was exceptional, which is essential for a children’s book. The cover was also very attractive, drawing me into the book. Overall, Mark has written an excellent story, and I love it!
