The Witch’s Lost Love by Cathy A. Corn is a lovely mystery with an empowering theme, endearing characters, and charm. Stephanie has found a comfortable routine working as a waitress and going home to her cat. She has even discovered a community for herself with a group of women who have accepted her and have taught her about living in harmony with everything around her. Everything is perfect until one of the members - Flo - disappears, which has everyone concerned for the woman’s well-being. When Stephanie’s friend convinces her to help investigate, she discovers that there is a lot she didn’t know about Flo and works to put together how the pieces connect to her.
Cathy A. Corn’s portrayal of the witches is rooted in healing and empowerment. Stephanie’s journey is easy to relate to as she’s been drifting in life and now has become part of this community, slowly giving her purpose. The witches in this world are grounded and feel realistic. Corn crafts them as people first, which helps give the mystery a lighthearted bent. The mystery has a slow build-up with Stephanie’s friend being the one who is concerned and she’s the one that pushes her to take the disappearance seriously. This is a clever way of creating an interest in Flo as a character, which Corn uses to create suspense around Flo’s life, carefully revealed through Stephanie’s investigation. Obstacles are cleverly used for humor and action as everything for Stephanie quickly goes downhill, working against her finding out the truth. The romance in the story is slow with Stephanie not quite open to the concept of ‘great love’ and the connection she has with a friend comes with a lot of potential. The Witch’s Lost Love casts a perfectly balanced spell with a mystery that has magic, empowerment, suspense, romance, and charm.
