The Weight of a Feather: A Mother’s Journey through the Opiate Addiction Crisis by Lynda Hacker Araoz is the touching story of a family that never gives up on their son as he travels the hard road of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. This story depicts the inside view of a mother and her family affected by the actions and choices of an addicted son as they try one treatment after another with very little success. Araoz discovers the hard way that addiction is difficult enough without being worsened by the lack of real help for those that try desperately to escape the unending cycles and relapses. Through first-hand experiences, Araoz also learns that when the light at the end of a long tunnel of addiction finally shines, the effects and scars linger long after the healing process has begun.
The Weight of a Feather is the well organized personal account of a mother who struggles along with her family to help her children through the crisis faced when a loved one is addicted to opiates. Araoz’s real-life journey, through thick and thin with her son, is a story that belongs in the hands of those facing this path or know someone else who is struggling. I love how Araoz points out what most people don’t see i.e. addiction not only affects and harms the addict, it is a dark cloud of despair that envelops those who must suffer as they try to help the addict, even when they think they can’t. I recommend The Weight of a Feather to anyone who wants or needs more insight on the subject of addiction. On a personal note: It took serious courage to tell this story and I am grateful that I got to read it. Thank you, Lynda Hacker Araoz, for sharing this touching roller coaster of truth.
