The Ways of Wayward Witches by Evelyn King is a paranormal fantasy that follows the story of 20-year-old Lumen, who is a witch. Lumen is the next in line to her grandmother’s throne, although she doesn’t want it. In this magical community, every witch has a gift, but Lumen keeps hers a secret because she believes it caused the deaths of her parents. A chance encounter takes her back in time to 1888, to the events preceding the great war between witches and vampires, and she learns about love, friendship, and betrayal. Lumen returns to 2023 and finds that things have changed. She’ll have to work with the witches’ mortal enemies, vampires, for a chance to save the whole magical community.
I loved this book. The magic draws you in almost immediately. At first, it was reminiscent of Harry Potter—a more mature version—complete with its version of You-Know-Who called The Unnamed. However, The Ways of Wayward Witches quickly evolves into its own unique story and is definitely not to be categorized as a run-of-the-mill paranormal fantasy. Every time I thought I had figured out where the book was going, Evelyn King did a 360 on me with the plot, and I absolutely loved it. At first, I wasn’t sure if I liked Lumen; she seemed callous, especially toward men, but I grew to love her; she’s incredibly brave, kind, and loyal. I can totally see The Ways of Wayward Witches adapted into a Netflix series. It also ended in the mother of all cliffhangers, leaving me eager to read the next series in the installment.
