In The Unlocked Path by Janis Robinson Daly, the author has taken an exhilarating time in history and written a wonderfully heartfelt, inspirational, enthusiastic, energetic, and courageous story about events between the years 1897 to 1920 and how brave the women of the era were. Eliza Edwards witnesses a family tragedy and is motivated to enter medical college in an era when only five percent of the doctors were female. The author relates her struggles and determination in the most interesting and intriguing way. With only the support of her female friends and the strength of her ambition, Eliza heads into uncharted territory. The reader’s attention is caught from the first page to the very last as they follow the lives of the characters as these unfold in this story.
The Unlocked Path revolves around the Edwards family and how they grow and succeed without a patriarch at the head of their family and how the women who have each lost a loved one have fought to work and earn a decent living to support themselves and their relatives. The main characters are Eliza Edwards, Albie, and Fred Edwards, brothers to Eliza, Aunt Florence, Aunt Estelle, and Josephine. Laura Edwards is the mother of Eliza, Albie, and Fred and the older sister to Florence, Estelle, and Josephine. The wonderful main characters and the minor ones that cross their paths on their journeys capture the reader's attention and imagination as the story advances. The reader is inspired to actually imagine themselves living through those times, both good and bad, and wondering if they would have been able to accomplish as much without all the modern cons and the rights we enjoy today. It was a most enlightening and intriguing book and I really enjoyed it. Thank you, Janis Robinson Daly, for this wonderful story.
