The Air Formulas by Britt Nunes offers readers a world where the lines between human and botanical life blur innovatively. The novel introduces readers to a unique sci-fi universe where the planet Aegror and Earth exist in tandem, sharing more than just a solar orbit as each bears the weight of the other's survival, literally and metaphorically. The narrative follows the characters’ intertwined lives, bound by their destinies to the biotechnological marvels that sustain their worlds. These characters, particularly the protagonist Sparrow, are vessels for a revolutionary technology where orchids integrated into their spines produce oxygen, a critical element sent back to a dystopian Earth desperate for clean air.
Britt Nunes excels at world-building. In this setting, cutting-edge biotechnology intersects with the decline of a civilization on the brink of collapse. The vivid descriptions of the lush, oxygen-producing flora growing from the characters’ bodies are haunting and beautiful, highlighting the symbiotic yet parasitic relationships that define the narrative. I was most impressed with the character development. Sparrow’s journey from a sheltered existence within the O2 Corps to a brave insurgent challenging her fate is masterfully drawn. Her evolution is well-articulated, and the supporting characters are given depth and motivations that connect with the central themes of freedom and survival. The pacing is brisk, with suspense and action distributed well. I had no problem following the storyline; it is an engaging read, and the way Nunes uses technological and botanical elements (as well as metaphor and imagery) to craft a narrative of ecological and social commentary is very creative. The Air Formulas is a unique and compelling read for sci-fi enthusiasts and anyone interested in themes of environmentalism, technology, and human ethics.
