Kate the Earthling is a children's picture book written by Kate Shooltz, featuring illustrations by Winona Kieslich. The story follows a young girl named Kate who moves to a new place and begins to wonder about the meaning of home. During a walk in her new neighborhood, she discovers a forest filled with enchanting sounds and beautiful scenery. As Kate explores the forest, she encounters various creatures that share their unique perspectives on home. Through her interactions with a mushroom, an owl, a beaver, a whale, and a wise tree, Kate learns that everyone belongs and is connected to the earth. The earth serves as a source of life, shelter, and nourishment for all, highlighting why we should be proud to be called Earthlings.
Kate the Earthling beautifully celebrates the wonders of nature and the importance of finding a sense of belonging in new environments, as well as within ourselves. Through Kate's journey, young readers are encouraged to appreciate the diverse forms of life and perspectives that exist in the world, fostering a sense of connection and responsibility toward nature. Children need to learn to be environmental stewards as they grow because the health of our planet relies on their understanding and appreciation of its beauty and significance in our lives. Kate Shooltz's narration is simple and easy to understand, making it accessible to children while also relatable to anyone who has ever moved to a new place and sought to find their place in it. The eye-catching artwork brings the story to life. I loved the warm colors and floral theme, as they perfectly align with the book's message and create a calming, inviting atmosphere for readers. Overall, this is a wonderful read with a message about belonging, the beauty of nature, and the importance of environmental stewardship.
