The Unforgiven is a work of epic fantasy by A. Katie Rose, set in a world of warring kings, prophecies, gods and magic. Our trio of central characters shares the same goal, but for different purposes: recover the child of prophecy, the one said to bring peace to two violent and vengeful lands. The renegade Captain Vanyar, once a great hero and still a great shapeshifter, seeks to rescue Princess Iyumi, a woman connected to the all powerful gods, but the turncoat Prince Flynn also seeks Iyumi for his own desperate reasons. Everyone in the novel verges on death, delivered swiftly by their enemies, and their race to find the child keeps them united despite their differences. It might just keep them alive too.
Readers who enjoy a lengthy, involved read with plenty of inner turmoil will love the way A. Katie Rose transports them into the minds of the novel’s main cast. The political landscape of The Unforgiven is well devised to create a cruel backdrop of violence, kidnap and treachery, which ensures action and intrigue at the novel’s every turn. The snappy banter between warriors and somewhat hedonistic motives of the characters may draw a largely male readership, but any die-hard fantasy fan is sure to enjoy the quests, danger, arranged marriages and ultimate bloody battles where enemies unite against a far greater evil. Overall, The Unforgiven is a well written fantasy epic which will suit adult audiences looking for action packed thrills as well as psychological drama from the primary cast.
