“We were the unforgivables, the outcasts, and the monsters in the dark. But despite our shortcomings, we were a family.” In The Unforgivable Act (A Beaumont Bros. Circus Mystery, Book 1) by Tabi Slick, Emma’s abusive parents make her life a living hell but she never retaliates until one fateful night. She could feel strange power coursing through her veins as she literally rips her father’s heart out and burns her mother to death. As she runs from the authorities, the only ones who can help her are the strange members of Beaumont Bros. Circus.
Set in Victorian London, The Unforgivable Act is an unabashed tale celebrating the peculiarity of the circus while revealing a world usually hidden from ordinary humans. The bond between unique individuals which is essential for their survival is explored. With its fast-paced plot, the narrative brings the characters and the settings alive as far as a novella's length allows, taking on the qualities of a supernatural story, a historical fantasy, and even a tale of self-discovery. The dark elements of blood and gore complement the series' mysterious concept. The varied cast is wonderfully personalized; Wilson Davies, Emma, brothers Antoine and Artus, Franziska, and Timur are intriguing characters with even more intriguing backgrounds although not all details are revealed. The ending hints at both a hopeful and a dire future for the protagonists. Short and entertaining, this is a solid Book 1 for the Beaumont Bros. Circus Mystery, and fans of Tabi Slick will be pleased.
