The Story of Lucius Cane by Vanya Ferreira is a tale of two men in London, both of different supernatural backgrounds, in the year 1794. Anne Hathborne is left to walk home alone from a ball when her assigned escort passes out drunk in a stable. As she starts her walk alone, she is confronted by a tall stranger dressed in black – Lucius Cane – who advises Anne that the streets are not safe for beautiful women who walk alone at night. Lucius proceeds to walk her home. Jack Estenborough is a hybrid werewolf, turned when he was just a boy. His reputation as a ruthless pirate leads people to stay out of his way. Jack’s favorite hobby is in killing those who hunt animals for fun, thus satiating his thirst for raw meat. Being such a formidable hunter, he is quickly hired as a paid killer. Jack’s next target, for a reward of 100 gold guineas, is none other than Lucius Cane – the vampire who prefers to feed on his own kind and protect humans. The ensuing fight-to-the-death leads to a shocking end.
This was very much a supernatural tale with a twist. Vanya Ferreira’s unique imagination has enabled such an unbelievable tale as The Story of Lucius Cane to be told with such believability. Both Lucius and Jack are vicious, yet likable characters and I found myself cheering for them both, unable to stop reading until the story’s end. While the tale is very short, the delivery is so outstanding that I recommend this as a great read to all who enjoy a good thriller, with action, adventure, drama, and a tragic hero or two thrown into their supernatural cocktail.
