The Sons of Starmount: Memoir of a Ten-Year-Old Boy by Mark Elliott is a tantalizing memoir that filled me with nostalgia for the child I once was and for the connection with a place in my own life that once was home and a wide door for adventure. In telling the story of a wild band of boys growing up in Starmount Drive, Tallahassee, Florida, the author compels readers to look back at their own origins and to the children they once were. Set in the 1970s, the author's story takes readers on an exciting journey through childhood experiences, bringing to life friendships and adventures and the excitement that accompanies coming of age reality for young boys.
This is a brilliantly written memoir and the setting is well captured. It plays a very symbolic role in the narrative and in the life of the author, perceived as a springboard from which he took the first flights into life. There are vivid descriptions of the street, the lights, and the historical period in which the story took place comes out neatly. The voice is captivating and strong, fortified by the rare sense of humor that permeates the entire narrative. The author writes about themes of friendship, adventure, family, and allows the link between man and his environment to come out beautifully in the writing. The Sons of Starmount: Memoir of a Ten-Year-Old Boy has a lightness in tone and an evocative style that makes for an enjoyable read. I was captivated by the unique turn of phrase, the terrific descriptions, and the hilarity that accompanies the episodes in the young life of the author. Mark Elliott does an impeccable job in sharing a unique story with universal appeal.
