The Shadowed Moon by Elli Morgan is a paranormal romance featuring Dave Patton, a vampire hunter, and Sarah McAllister, a newly turned vampire with a haunting past. Readers meet Sarah as she surrenders to Dave’s group of hunters. She is still trying to reconcile her humanity with her vampiric nature and hoping to help the hunters in their cause. Confronted by this anomaly, Dave finds his convictions tested and begins to wonder if Sarah could be different. Sarah joins the hunters in protecting her newfound allies when the vampires' compound is attacked. Between training and going on missions together, the bond between Dave and Sarah grows, and they are torn between their personal convictions and growing attraction. An encounter with two powerful vampires from Europe, Cain and Lilah, offers Sarah and Dave an opportunity to join forces with them to topple the American vampire royalty. Will Dave and Sarah be able to fight their deepest fears and insecurities? What sacrifices would they have to make for the greater good?
With a fast-paced narrative, Elli Morgan has created an engaging and vivid story in The Shadowed Moon. The alternating perspectives between Sarah’s struggle with her insecurities and Dave’s internal conflict provide insight into the characters’ motivations and emotions. The focus of the narrative is on the two main protagonists and how their perspectives change as they grow closer to each other. The story starts with both protagonists firm in their convictions—Dave with his well-founded hatred for vampires because his family was killed by them, and Sarah with her belief that no one would accept her as a vampire. As the story progresses, readers see how they struggle with their individual thoughts and fight these before finally deciding on the paths they want their lives to take. There is a definite learning arc in the characters' storyline, and readers will feel the protagonists' angst as they read. The book is edited well, and this also adds to the cohesive narrative. Although the plot covers themes of love and loyalty, it also portrays the blurred lines between good and evil. Add this to your TBR pile if you are a fan of paranormal fiction.
