When Reverend Harper's son is seemingly about to inherit a large fortune from his Uncle Will, Mrs. Bennet is determined to force one of her daughters upon him through a marriage proposal. The daughters and Mr. Bennet are only half-heartedly involved in Mrs. Bennet's end goal, and none of the girls seems interested in marrying Mr. Harper. She immediately invites him over to dinner in the hopes of spurring his interest in one of her daughters. She has a fancy meal prepared for him and wants to make him the guest of honor in their home. However, it seems that Mrs. Bennet may have been misinformed in some of the news she received about Mr. Harper. What will be the outcome of their dinner party with him? The Revelation by Margaret Lynette Sharp is a dramatic short story that will leave readers surprised by the ending.
I had not read any Jane Austen fanfiction until recently, but I thoroughly enjoyed this short story, The Revelation. Mrs. Bennet amused me greatly when I read Pride and Prejudice a few years ago, and I loved how her characterization was very similar in this novella. Lydia and her outgoing personality never failed to give me a laugh, and her exclamation during the dinner was extremely entertaining to me. Though the plot was short and to the point, I still felt that I had a solid grip on the characters and development of the story. For fans of Jane Austen who also enjoy fanfiction, I would recommend reading this short but sweet piece by Margaret Lynette Sharp.
