The Ranatanland Tales by Lloyd Chiasson is a children’s adventure. Gus is nine years old and having the time of his life. Staying with his grandparents while his mother goes to fetch his father, he is both excited and fearful as a hurricane batters the house. Hunkered down with candles, his grandfather reads Gus a series of books written by Gus’s great-grandfather and, as he listens to the tales of Ranatanland, Gus finds himself transported to a magical place. There he meets a pair of teenagers looking for a fun adventure and on their travels they encounter all sorts of weird and wonderful things – a tree that talks and even a dragon that can read minds. Gus’s great-grandfather said he wrote these books based on his own life in Ranatanland, but Gus isn’t sure. Is the place real or is it just a fairytale? There’s only one way to find out.
The Ranatanland Tales by Lloyd Chiasson is a fun and fascinating story that transports young readers right into the heart of this fantastical, magical land. The story starts in the real world, and as the tales of Ranatanland unfold before you, reality merges with magic. Told as a series of events that really did happen, you are taken on an action-packed adventure with lots of action and plenty of cool, colorful characters. The author has a way with words, a way of drawing you into the story and keeping you there until the ending. The characters are well-developed, easy to like, and living the kind of lives that some kids reading the story will wish they could live too. A fabulous story, well-aimed at its targeted market.
