Author Biography

I wrote my first novel, "Kimberly and the Seventh Grade Disaster", when I was thirteen years old. Good thing it never saw the light of day.

In the years since, I continued writing stories, earned a degree in Creative Writing from Concordia University, read a lot of books (some over and over, like Catcher in the Rye), watched a lot of movies, got married and became a stepmom.

The Pool Theory is my first novel that strangers are allowed to read.

Kye Penton is fifteen years old and quite enamored with Claudia, a girl in his class. Suddenly Annie, another girl from a past summer, arrives and reveals to him that he is the father of the child she is carrying and is three months along the way. Suddenly, at a tender age of fifteen years, Kye is faced with adult challenges, and struggles with life choices – this on top of school, rumors, bullying, and intrusive questions from friends. In the middle of it, Claudia breaks up with him. He and Annie look into options on what to do with the child – abortion, adoption or keeping the child. When Annie declares that she does not want an abortion, Kye becomes more confused, but is later torn between adoption and raising the child himself.

Sex is a delicate topic of discussion between adults and teens, but this novel not only makes for a good read, but it can help teens approach the subject, bridge the gap in these discussions, as well as explain the consequences of teen pregnancy and misconceptions about sex, among others. Not only does it cover these topics, but it also touches on the problem of bullying among students and how devastating it can become for victims who otherwise need a lot of understanding. Honest and enlightening, "The Pool Theory" is more than just a teen novel; it is an insightful look into the hearts and minds of young people who find themselves in this life-changing situation. I highly recommend this book to young and old people alike so that they will have better understanding about teen age pregnancies and realize its dire repercussions, and find ways to prevent it.
