Plutocrat: A member of a plutocracy. Plutocracy: A country that is ruled by the richest people or a group of very rich people who have a lot of power. The Plutocrat is a very articulate novel by Rory Harden. The Plutocrat takes place in the near future and while that future doesn’t look so good, it is certainly interesting to read about. Rory Harden has a knack for writing about the social implications of the political and economic reality. I found The Plutocrat highly informative and entertaining with its slightly depressing vision of what America, Australia, and the rest of the world will look like in the near future. The future described in The Plutocrat is very believable and Rory Harden made me think that it is very probable, if not inevitable.
The plot of The Plutocrat is taken right from today’s headlines, then expanded on in the way only a good writer can. The characters are very realistic, even the desperate ones like Sandy and Ricky. I liked The Plutocrat mostly because it is so well written, but also because it gave me hope that an average person without massive amounts of money can still influence the future. We live in a time when America is changing at a phenomenal pace. It will change no matter what we do, but novels like The Plutocrat might help some of us at least try to make informed, intelligent decisions. Domestic politics, international politics, good writing, and great characters make The Plutocrat a novel you won’t want to miss.
