The Outworlds: Resurgence by Daniel P. Douglas starts with a prologue that took place in 15,000 B.C. on Earth. Humans were brutalized by Lizard Men-red-chested, bi-pedal reptilians-except for one boy who was saved by a blue-chested, blue-eyed counterpart of the aliens. Fast-forward to the distant future of the 24th century where 23-year-old Second Lieutenant Jerod Eastaway is doubting his capability of leading his platoon on Oeskone, the most remote planet in the Outworlds. Unfortunately, the recon mission quickly becomes a suicidal one as they have to fight against telekinetic weapons and red-chested reptilian humanoids. As Eastaway and the rest of his men are trying to survive, he discovers the painful connection between his foes and his traumatic childhood, including what’s in store for humanity’s fate.
Despite being the second book in The Outworlds series, Resurgence is a standalone and Douglas provides helpful summarized details of its predecessor. The story’s take on the reptilian humanoid concept that is prominent in sci-fi, ufology and conspiracy theories is intriguing and deftly done. The tense political relations between military, government and powerful conglomerates easily reflect the ones we know today. Familiarization with the world building was slightly slow for me. That said, Resurgence is intricate, plausible and impressive. The prominent military aspect of it reminds me of Battlestar Galactica. The plot is dense without being overwhelming and, despite all the sci-fi elements and impressive tech, human emotions still reign in the story line. The characters have good depth, plausible strengths and flaws, and solid dialogue. All in all, Resurgence has the dark overtones and astuteness that will entertain sci-fi fans. I look forward to joining Eastaway, Sapp, and Tatiana once again in the next installment, Resurgence II.
