The Outreach Committee: Because Marriage Can Be Murder by C.L. Woodhams is a suspense story of spousal abuse. The Battered Women’s Escape Foundation is an escape for women who have suffered abuse at the hands of their partner. It’s a shelter, a place for counselling, and a place to train up the women to start a new life, free of abuse. There is one part of society that cannot take refuge in the shelters – the wives and partners of the rich and the influential, men who can locate their wives with just one call. The Outreach Committee is set up by Carl Ewald and Mora Rey to “help” free these women through accidents that befall their husbands. The latest is Taylor’s husband, but when she starts receiving odd phone calls, she has her suspicions that the accident failed. One more big problem is about to enter the scene – their latest benefactor, Quentin Pryor, has been brought on board to help them with their finances, but it soon becomes apparent that he is an abuser himself. How far can the Outreach Committee go this time and will another accident be one too many?
The Outreach Committee: Because Marriage Can be Murder by C.L. Woodhams was an intriguing story that grabbed me from the first page. It is a story that is all too real for many women – and men – in the world today and it gives an insight into the way the mind of an abuser works. I have one small criticism – I found that the story jumped from one scene to a later one without any warning but that may well be the way it formatted for the Kindle. That takes nothing away from the actual story, which I found to be well written, gripping and full of suspense. The last part of the story in particular was a roller-coaster ride, and I must say I didn’t see the ending coming. I also found the characters suited the storyline completely and feel that the book shows just how much research went into writing it. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will be looking for more in the future from C.L. Woodhams.
