Mr. Cannelloni's Circus by Tuula Pere is an adventure story aimed at children ages 7 and up. It’s a chapter book with colorful, detailed pictures and circus adventures. The Cannelloni circus has been in the business for a hundred years, started by Mr. Cannelloni's great-grandfather. It boasts many of the exciting attractions these institutions are known for, although these days a real circus is a rare treat because many have disappeared from our world. This book details various characters and their roles in the circus, highlighting what a circus is and what it takes to maintain one. However, the circus is in trouble. Mr. Cannelloni is running out of money, the crowds are thinning, and the constant maintenance required to keep the show going may be more trouble than it is worth. So what to do?
I found this tale engaging, fun, and realistic. Sometimes I wondered if this story might be taken from real events—that’s how it seemed. I was swept up in the characters, rooting for them all the way, hoping that everything would turn out well in the end. Once I started reading, I was hooked, and could not put the book down. One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is how it provides realistic details about a circus that a reader can connect with, envision, and appreciate. It also brings the characters up close so we can identify with every one of them. I imagine children all over the world will love this book. In short, Mr. Cannelloni's Circus by Tuula Pere is a highly recommended read.
