The Mum for the Job by Teena Raffa-Mulligan is the story of Chloe, a young girl who lost her mother to cancer. At one point the family begins to feel that they need someone to be the mother figure. Chloe sees a spark of hope the day her father announces that Fern, a special friend, is coming to meet the family. Chloe grows restless to meet this friend while daydreaming about everything she will do with Fern if she indeed becomes Chloe's new mom. However, when Fern shows up, Chloe unexpectedly discovers she is wheelchair-bound. Readily deciding that Fern is not fit for the job, Chloe takes desperate steps to get rid of her. With every passing day, Fern makes it increasingly difficult for Chloe to dislike her, and by the end, Chloe finds herself questioning what she truly wants.
Teena Raffa-Mulligan’s The Mum for the Job is a heartwarming story about love and acceptance, two of the vital things that hold a family together. I especially love how Teena portrays Fern as a woman of immense strength and profound kindness. I appreciated how she aimed to educate readers about disabilities through the use of an idealistic protagonist without being overly preachy. She gives us Chloe, a girl whose limiting expectations are likely to be present in many minds, both young and old. The lessons to be derived come from the beautiful representation of Fern, the positive attitude of the other characters, and Chloe's character development.
