The Oncoming Storm by Liane Mahugh revolves around Dr. Raya Salian, her husband Dev, and their team as they embark on dangerous missions in space. Initially, they face a training exercise aboard the Pathfinder, where Raya must prepare for a critical mission to explore a nebula. During the mission, they encounter the destruction of the Pathfinder and the capture of Dev and other crew members by a group targeting Raya. She joins a rescue operation to free Dev and the crew but is up against an avalanche of obstacles, including hostile and self-destructing ships. Raya’s abilities as an Elemental become central, especially when she is captured by the enemy in an attempt to force her to assist in their plans, which Raya resists. The fight to stop Savon coincides with a fight for survival, and Raya reconciling the secrets she uncovers about her genetic origins.
Liane Mahugh’s The Oncoming Storm: Elemental Book 3 is an exciting, high-stakes mixed bag of danger, adventure, and heart. As far as science fiction fantasy hybrids go, Mahugh's writing is accessible to all readers regardless of their time in the genre, but still solid enough for those who have been around long enough to know what's good. The Elemental series is good. Raya Salian is brilliant and capable, displaying both strength and resilience, as well as her vulnerability and she continues to leverage her power. The relationship with Dev hits some turbulence. I think this is important because the imperfections of a partner and their actions, regardless of intent, can be painful, and here Raya and Dev are relatable. Overall, this is a superb continuation of the series, solidifying Mahugh’s ability to give readers the intense and heartfelt ride we have grown accustomed to. Very highly recommended.
