The Magic Straw Hat by Karen Jonice Bricker is an exciting story that will take young readers on an adventure, along with Caitie Faye and her great-grandmother's straw hat. The story connects three generations of family and conveys the message of family bonding in a very subtle and simple manner. Caitie wears her great-grandmother Delia's straw hat and goes gardening one warm spring morning with Grammy and Limerick, her cat. Grammy then tells Caitie the story of the straw hat, a story that takes Caitie on a whimsical and magical journey along with the straw hat. So why not join Caitie and her straw hat on their enchanting journey and discover new things!
The story is delightful and the illustrations complement the author's thoughts, ideas and concepts with clarity. The book teaches kids the pleasures of traveling and also shows them the Irish heritage through Caitie's background. It's a good bedtime storybook and is also perfect for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The book not only speaks about family bonding, but also teaches kids the joys of traveling and adventure. There are many new things to learn from the story. Caitie and her Irish heritage are interesting and all characters in the story complement the plot beautifully. I like the way the magic straw hat has been given a personality of its own. It's definitely a book worth owning in one's personal collection, not only for the message, but also for its magic!
