The Love Tank by Andrea Mendoza-Vasconez is a charming love story. Loving others, loving yourself, giving and receiving love, and lacking it. The metaphor of having a love tank inside you makes it easier for the younger child to understand some of the situations discussed in the book. The analogies of tanks for food, knowledge, love, and visual illustrations allow the child to comprehend the story. The verbal illustrations help the child to imagine how giving and receiving love can affect you as a person and how it affects those around you. Likewise, when their tank runs low, they can imagine the effect this has on them and those around them—understanding how love makes a difference may help a child to understand better why people behave in certain ways.
Andrea Mendoza-Vasconez presents a sweet story of loving children. The age-appropriate language and format will encourage children to read or want to be read to. Parents will appreciate the ease and clarity in the writing. The discussions of how love and the lack of love affect us and others are clearly defined in this children’s story. The illustrator, Rita Nilson, did a beautiful job with the artwork. It depicts everything being discussed in the story. The pictures, the coloration, and the style are perfect for a children’s book. The visual story is beautifully executed and flawless. The artwork alone is worth the read.
