The Little Chick by Nat Williams is a cute picture book for young children with an important message behind it. The story is based on a little chick who is mean to the other animals; she pokes fun at their appearance and it makes them feel sad. The little chick soon finds herself in trouble when she meets a fox who invites her to join him for lunch. The chick happily accepts the fox's kind invitation but soon regrets it as she realizes that she's on the menu. The chick thinks back to the beaver with sharp teeth, the ostrich with long legs, and wishes she had them so she could escape. Unbeknown to the little chick, the other animals rally around and come up with a plan to save her from the fox. In the end, the little chick realizes her wrongdoing. This book conveys a huge message of treating people with kindness, and not making fun of their appearance based on your own because everyone is different and it makes them who they are. Grab a copy of The Little Chick and teach your child this important message.
I enjoyed every page of Nat Williams's The Little Chick and the powerful message behind it. The story is so simple yet effective in teaching children to be kind to others. I felt sorry for the animals the chick made fun of, which I found could be useful in teaching empathy; another important lesson. The illustrations have been perfectly created and help show the emotions the animals are feeling, which will also aid in the teaching of empathy. The dialogue is easy to read and flows nicely, which complements the story even more. It's clear that Nat Williams has true writing talent when it comes to children's content, and I'm certain that this book will be a huge success with parents and teachers. All children should read The Little Chick at least once to learn the essential message Nat Williams teaches.
