Ethan is a hyper, dirty little boy who is avoided by his classmates. His clothes are frayed and muddy, and he doesn’t smell very good. But he does have one good friend, though, and when Alex invites Ethan to church on the provision that he wears different clothes, Ethan is excited to go. His mother buys him second-hand clothes and Ethan takes a bath for his first-ever trip to church. At church, Ethan learns about reverence and that he is a child of God.

With a strong storyline reflective of the author’s strong faith, The Little Boy Who Found the Chapel is a wonderful story for young readers. There is a boy like Ethan in every classroom, making the story relatable. The reality of Alex’s motives is also familiar, especially in the innocence of youth. Author Michele Denise Gilcrease reinforces the adage of not judging a book by its cover in this short story of one small boy’s journey into possible salvation.

This is a valuable addition to the church school and home school environment. While a lesson in morality, The Little Boy Who Found the Chapel is a concise example of an often-neglected vision of world compassion. This is a story of what hope, tolerance, and acceptance can provide in a child’s life. Michele Denise Gilcrease shows promise in the world of children’s storytelling with words of inspiration and charming artwork.
