Over the past few years, we have survived earthquakes, terrorism, and even a deadly pandemic. I believe this explains why most people fear that the world has not yet seen the worst tragedies and disasters of the twenty-first century. If humanity does face devastation, will it be caused by another deadly virus like COVID-19 or by a more lethal pandemic? How would we get by? Gary Hickman's The Light Reapers: Fight for a New Beginning addresses this concern in a well-written story about a world decimated by a deadly infection. Those who have not been infected must fight for their lives daily. The infected are more than just the living dead; they've evolved and will torture their victims before killing them. Amid this chaos, we discover a special operations unit that has been forced to abandon vital research that could lead to a cure. They travel to Mississippi hoping to complete a new mission, but they are shocked by even more problems and a heartbreaking discovery.
The plot of this book is fantastic. As the story progresses, more details are revealed, and suspense builds. Gary Hickman uses his strengths to piece together this novel, and one evident strength from the first page is his ability to immerse readers in scenes through detailed descriptions. Another aspect of this book I enjoyed was Gary's approach to storytelling. He had complete control over the story's flow, unfolding events at precisely the correct times. Every chapter focused on a single topic and wove the circumstances around it. Although the concept in this book is fictitious, the author made every effort to make the story as realistic and believable as possible. For example, on page 71, we find Major Sergeant Priest's lover Lia, who accepts that even though she knows Priest has flaws, she still loves him for who he is. This scene, I believe, represents how we all find ourselves loving others despite their faults or shortcomings. The Light Reapers is an action-packed mystery novel that anyone looking for a story that will take them off the grid should read.
