The Light in the Sound by Vanessa Gonzales is a beautiful and realistic fiction story about the life of one woman, Rachel Richardson. Rachel lives in Seattle, Washington and works at a porn shop. She has very little contact with her family anymore and is okay with the fact that they live a thousand miles away. She has friends in Seattle, but they aren’t uplifting, encouraging, or very supportive. Rachel also suffers from night terrors and finds it difficult to combat the next day from lack of sleep. Rachel wants to be loved, but not only in the romantic sense of the word. She wants to wake up and live her life and not act like a zombie and waste her days. She wants to reconnect with people and have a human connection. But putting her trust in people isn’t as easy as it seems, especially when people continue to disappoint and hurt her. Old wounds are reopened and new lies pile up. Rachel wants to give up and write people off forever. Rachel must decide if she has the strength inside of her to start over and trust again.
The Light in the Sound is one of those books that you won’t be able to put down until you run out of pages to read. Vanessa Gonzales has created beautiful, deep, and complex characters that you will love. I immediately felt connected to them and loved how real they felt as they came across the page. I went through a range of emotions while reading. I felt happy, sad, and discouraged, but ultimately I wanted more! I was happy to escape to this place that was so different than my normal life. The setting of a porn shop is just brilliant!
