Niki Phillips was born within sight of the River Liffey and was educated in Dublin, Ireland. Her principal career to date has been in various aspects and levels of education, especially in educational provision for gifted and talented children. She has also had an active involvement in the world of politics. She now lives in a village near the edge of the Cotswolds in the heart of England.

"The Liffey Flows On By" written by Niki Phillips is a well-written book with great characters spanning four generations. It is a saga of Irish brothers, their families and their friends starting in 1893 and ending in 1946. As the reader becomes acquainted with the Butlers, Flynns and supporting cast it is impossible not to cheer them on, as well as share in the tragedies they encounter, anxiously reading to see what happens next.
The story opens with young Milo mourning the death of his mother. We then are introduced to twin brothers Tom and Milo. We share in the twins' growing up years, the deep love they share for Rachel, knowing only one of them can marry her, and the pain and separation that causes them. We worry about Tom and Milo as they head off to fight for their beloved Ireland in the battles of World War One. As the years pass, we are introduced to the next generation of Butlers, Young Milo and his friends. We worry once again as Milo goes off to fight in World War Two. We delight to share in his finding love and happiness and we cheer him on through the hard times in the continuing saga of life on the River Liffey. Maggie Flynn is the beloved housekeeper and cook. She is there for everyone with advice, love and the secrets of her own. Her husband Billy is the man in charge of caring for the plantation. Billy deeply loves Maggie, their children and the Butler family and is willing to risk even his life to protect them all. The Flynn children Noola and Paddy are best friends to Milo and are a large part of all the twists and turns of life along the River Liffey.
The story ends exactly where it begins with another young Butler mourning the death of his parent. Niki Phillips has written a wonderful book of life spanning four generations and I can only hope she writes a sequel continuing the Butler story. I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy a family saga that makes you a part of the family.
