The Leader of Lors is Book Two of Fawn Bonning’s romantic epic fantasy series, The Atriian Trilogy. Christine is home with her family, with the exception of her brother Sam, whom she misses terribly. Christine’s had a baby, which was delivered by Caesarean Section; she’s back with Kyle, and she’s planning on moving in with him. Christine has been working at the ice cream parlor and is planning on going to college -- her life is just starting to get back on track. Then, on the evening before the move, she’s woken up by movements in her room and an earthy, damp smell. Her gaze settles on a large figure looming over her baby’s cradle. The person wraps the baby in a blanket and then flees out her bedroom door. Christine rushes after him and watches in horror as he approaches the pier. He jumps in with Rebecca in his arms, and Christine dives in after her daughter.
Fawn Bonning’s epic fantasy, The Leader of Lors: Book Two in The Atriian Trilogy, continues the saga of Christa, the famed loper of Zeria. This time around, Christa is no longer coming of age; she’s now a mother who will stand up to anyone, monster or warrior alike, who threatens that child of hers. I found The Leader of Lors to be a worthy successor to the first book in the series, The Heart of Hannen. Bonning expands Atriia, the alternative world Christa finds herself in, peopling it with new characters and enhancing the familiar ones from the first book.
In my review of The Heart of Hannen, I mentioned some awkwardness in using the glossary in the back of the book to translate the Atriian language. I found this far less troubling in the second volume, both because I was already familiar with many terms and also because Bonning often defines Atriian words within the text. The Leader of Lors is an enthralling adventure set in a world that is fully fledged and has a culture quite different from our own. I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to the third volume of The Atriian Trilogy.
