The Last Princess by Shelley Wilson tells the story of Edith, a teenager who embarked on a husband-seeking expedition around Northumbria with her two younger sisters, although she couldn't have been prepared for what was going to happen on her journey. Instead of attending balls and events, the expedition and her home were attacked, and she ends up being the last member of her family alive. As if that wasn't enough, she is torn from her homeland and becomes a slave to pirates. She fights every day to stay alive and fulfill her goal of returning home to claim back her throne and exact revenge on those who harmed and betrayed her family. As the story unfolds, she finds allies in the most unlikely place and realizes things aren’t always the way she was taught.
In The Last Princess, Edith, an Anglo-Saxon teen, suffers a great loss and had to adapt to her new reality and fight to regain her dream. I liked the development of the different characters, especially the protagonist's journey to becoming a strong woman. She had to change her mindset regarding her culture, which she had been told was completely barbaric. Solveig's past and story melted my heart and the support she offered Edith contributed significantly to her evolution. The pace is perfect and new events take place all the time. Shelley Wilson's comparison of the differences between Christian and Viking customs is remarkable and enriched the story, as it offers the perfect opportunity to learn a great deal about Viking mythology, a topic rarely addressed in young adult books.
