Compulsively readable, The Key is the opening entry in the Secret Defenders series by Felicia Rogers, deftly written and well balanced. It’s a beautiful story for fans of paranormal romance and those who enjoyed I am Number Four by Pittacus Lore. Maddie Clevenger is in high school in her senior year and she appears to be the quiet, socially inept type who prefers self-effacement to the boisterous cheerleaders. She is an orphan who lives with her grandma in Coal Creek. There's nothing exceptional about her, but she gets spotted by Chase Donovan who feels drawn towards her, an attraction that combines with the need to protect her. But from what? That is what he is about to discover and it won’t be long. Question is: does he have what it takes to protect her from the monsters that are after her?
Felicia Rogers pulled me in with the strength of her characters and, from the moment I met Maddie, I became intrigued by her. There is a peculiarity about her that is intriguing and any reader will want to find out what she hides. Chase has a past that is nothing similar to what most kids experience, a history characterized by constant movement. This past enriches his character and it is explored vividly and skillfully in the backstory. The author allows her characters to grow and develop with the evolving plot and conflict while keeping the realism of the story at its best. The Key has deep layers in its plot, a fast-paced romance with quirky characters and scenes that are emotionally charged and focused. A real emotional romp for fans of the genre.
