The Journey of the Most Liberated Woman in America by Barbara Williamson is the autobiography of a woman who founded Sandstone Retreat. The organization, which existed for five years in California starting in the late 1960s, was a place for men and women to live together without our cultural or societal norms. Clothing was optional (most members and guests went nude) and there were no rules sexually, except for all those involved agreeing on their behavior. So for example, married partners could have sex with other people. Visitors were also welcome, as long as they agreed to the rules, or as Williamson said, no rules. Much of the book is devoted to Williamson’s love for exotic cats. She had a bobcat as a pet for years and later started an organization to care for big (non-domesticated) cats.
The Journey of the Most Liberated Woman in America by Barbara Williamson is a fascinating book. Most people will not be familiar with Sandstone Retreat, the organization she co-founded, so learning about the organization and the unusual lifestyle of its residents and guests will be an eye-opening experience. The book is thought-provoking and sure to be a stimulating conversation starter. Obviously, not everyone will agree with or appreciate Williamson’s lifestyle, but everyone should admire her choice to live her life as she pleased. And anyone who reads with an open mind will enjoy it. Note that most of the book contains sexually explicit content. One example is a man watching while his wife has sex with another man. There are a few drawings of nude people. Anyone who is interested in an alternative lifestyle will enjoy this book.
