The Jellyfish Effect is a work of novella-length fiction in the apocalyptic and literary sub-genres and was penned by author Ufuk Özden. Darkly humorous and highly conceptual, this fascinating slice of life examines a future in which the fate of humanity is sealed when planet Earth is set to be harvested for resources and the human race bussed out into the cosmos. Our protagonist has led a painfully safe existence up to the point where existence is threatened, and the plot follows his surreal journey to new companionship, suicide tourism and a desire to do something with life before his choices are taken away for good.
Dark, poignant, funny and surreal, author Ufuk Özden has crafted a masterpiece of storytelling that no reader will be able to put down until they reach the back cover. There are many strengths to the work, not least the conceptual structure of a world heading towards chaos, which is played out with an eerie sort of inevitability in the attitudes of both the narrator and the characters. I loved the psychological undertones in the crafting of the characters, which adds realism to an often surreal work and thereby ramps up that tension yet again. The humor comes from dark pathos and some indulgently inappropriate places, and it is certainly a novel that demands careful thought both in reading and after the experience is over. What results is a superb work from a talented writer, and I would highly recommend The Jellyfish Effect to readers seeking literary level philosophy and storytelling.
