As might be guessed from the title, The Immortals by Cheryl S. Mackey is a tale of long lived powerful beings. The story takes place in another realm or dimension so any similarities with the gods of ancient Greece or the pantheon from Norse mythology are coincidental. Immortals is the second part in an ongoing series and, since this is a rich world with its own rules and magic, I suggest reading the first book in the series just to get yourself firmly grounded in the world and characters. Ivo, Jaeger, Jadeth, and Emaranthe are on a quest to find Norii-Iasin, the unknown city, and Orin-Iad, the Citadel in the Sky. So far so good, but they don’t have a clue as to where these places are so actually this story is about finding a map to them.
Immortals is a powerful story about powerful personalities. As in many tales about powerful beings, their gifts are both a blessing and a curse. Also, as powerful as these people are, their enemies are more powerful and there are many more of them. A lot of the story involves working out the dynamics of the relationships in the core group of four. There are issues of love, trust, and leadership that have to be resolved before the group can find the map and reach their goals. Cheryl S. Mackey does a good job of moving the story along while at the same time feeding us the details we need to understand this world. I like the characters and I like stories about humans with great powers that they must learn to control. I look forward to reading the first book in the series as I wait for the next one.
