The Huntsman of Corvinus is a work of fiction in the horror subgenre. It is aimed at the mature reading audience and was penned by author Timothy Bryan. The book follows an American woman named Erica who has moved to Budapest with her daughter after her marriage falls apart. Her hopes of a new and happier life are immediately threatened when an otherworldly killer begins a slow and steady spree throughout the historical city. Reluctantly finding herself at the center of the ancient curse that drives the killer onward, Erica’s life becomes a race against time to stop the killing before she and her family become the next victims.
There’s something so wonderfully compelling about a horror story in which the author shows the protagonist's descent from ordinary life into one filled with supernatural horror. It is told with such a deliberate and controlled pace that the reader can’t completely put their finger on the exact moment the story moves from realism to fantasy. Timothy Bryan is a master at this pacing, controlling the narrative’s gradual descent from Erica’s life as a recent divorcee and single mother to her life facing off against supernatural killers stalking the streets of Budapest. What complements the pacing most is the investment I found myself making in Erica from very early on, thanks to the excellent characterization and gorgeous prose. The Huntsman of Corvinus is a masterclass in horror writing with dynamic characters, a terrifying monster underneath it all, and scenic Budapest as a beautiful backdrop to it all.
