The Healing of Windwalker by Donald L. Chadd begins with Richard Bishop coming across a sick and dying Native American in the mesas/mountainous regions of Colorado. Walker is an orphaned boy who had been taken in by a church-going couple, Buddy and Kathy. He loved his new family and their other son, Robbie, and embarked on a new life of school, friendships and church. But Walker’s relatives and tribe of origin wanted him back. Walker, a young man, recounts his life story to Bishop and an extraordinary and heart-breaking tale unfolds. Walker has had spiritual guidance steering him from wrong, and his struggles have caused him to develop into a spiritually attuned young man who believes his purpose is to teach his people that they must give up their bondage to the false traditions of their fathers i.e. forgive and be free.

The Healing of Windwalker is a poignant tale that describes the tribulations and nitty gritty of how life really was for main character, Walker. The story is nicely told from two different perspectives, Bishop’s and Walker’s, and alternates between the present and Walker’s past. Both characters are well depicted and I found both very believable and intriguing. Donald L. Chadd weaves the theologies and beliefs of both the Christian Bible and The Book of Mormon into his story as Walker finds understanding and purpose through his research and search for spiritual truths and meaning.

I loved the way Walker discovers (through his end of life visions and time spent in ‘spirit prison’ before entering Paradise) that unseen forces have always been at work in his life – the good guiding him to defeat the temptations of Satan. There is a lovely message in this book about freeing ourselves from the hang-ups and limiting beliefs and behaviors of our ancestors; and that when we understand the causes of others’ behaviors we cease to judge or respond in negative ways. Walker’s and then Bishop’s mission to show people the way of forgiveness, and so a happy life, is a liberating and hopeful theme that will resonate with readers. A unique, well-crafted story about fear, hatred, purpose, healing, and forgiveness that combines adventure with spiritual quest.

Like many kids who unfortunately end up on the wrong side of the foster care system, Walker had a very unstable and painful childhood. The first years of his life consisted of moving from one horrible home to another until a loving couple, Kathy and Buddy, finally took him in and gave him a real home. For the very first time, Walker lived in a home where he was truly loved and he felt that he belonged. Wanting to give him more security, Kathy and Buddy did everything they could to adopt Walker, but their efforts where always frustrated. As a result, year after year, Walker lived in constant fear of being taken away from the only true family he had ever known. Then one day that fear was realized, breaking him to the very core and sending him into a rage beyond reason. This sent him on a journey very different from what the last ten years had been molding him to become. The Healing of Windwalker is the journey of Walker Smith from a horrible childhood, to a loving home, to vendetta...and then to his ultimate path.

The Healing of Windwalker - A Story of Love, Hate and Redemption by Donald Chadd is an amazing tale of one man's life story and the people who shaped it - those who taught him right from wrong and those who showed him the unpleasant side of humanity. It is a story of love, faith, hatred, self-discovery and enlightenment. Set in a unique and complex environment, Walker's story is the tale of both sides of the foster care system. The Healing of Windwalker is an engaging tale that will at times have you feeling like you are on top of the hill with Walker as he narrates his story.

The Healing of Windwalker: A Story of Love, Hate and Redemption by Donald Chadd is the story of finding redemption, and forgiving yourself before anyone else can forgive you. The novel is about young Walker, who has been living with a foster family since the age of 6. He belongs to the Navajo Indian tribe and he cannot be adopted until his tribe gives permission. His foster family helped him grow in every sense of the word. However, he is not an ordinary kid. When he turns 15, he has a vision in which he must give a message to his tribe that can turn their lives upside down.

However, life has other plans for him. He wants to help his tribe, but when things do not go as planned, he is distracted from his destiny. He walks away from his true nature and demands retribution. But that only leads to circumstances that are not good for him or his adopted family. Can he walk the right path and save himself and his tribe? Or will his heart remain filled with distrust and manipulation? Will he fail in his mission?

This is a great adventure. And when you are reading it, make sure you have a tissue box right next to you. It was gut wrenching and thrilling at the same time. You cannot help but feel sympathetic to Walker and his turmoil. By the time you get into this story, you will be cheering Walker on and biting your nails. It is very well written and the characters are wonderful. I could not have asked for a better written novel.

In an interesting and intriguing storyline full of action, adventure and belief in God, The Healing of Windwalker: A Story of Love, Hate and Redemption by debut author Donald L. Chadd is a book that will keep readers turning the pages from the very start all the way through until the very end. Follow the story of Walker, an orphaned Navajo windwalker, who is placed with an LDS foster family. He lives with his loving family for years, and, as he turns fifteen, they are all waiting for the approval from the tribe for his adoption. At the same time, Walker has a vision and believes that he must get an urgent message from God to his people, but as he is preparing for this, he also finds out that there are forces at work trying to prevent his adoption from going through. His vision forgotten, he sets forth in anger to get revenge for this, and the outcome is one that readers are not likely to expect.

I enjoyed The Healing of Windwalker: A Story of Love, Hate and Redemption. Author Donald L. Chadd has created a very sympathetic character in Walker, and readers will find that they truly come to care about him. The scene setting and descriptive voice in the narrative is also top-notch. There is a strong Christian message throughout this book, and readers who enjoy a good work of Christian fiction should absolutely give this book a read! I hope that author Donald L. Chadd continues with his efforts in writing, and I look forward to seeing more from him in the future!

Walker thinks that there’s no one who really cares about him until he meets Kathy and Buddy, who take him in and treat him as their own rather than just a burden they’re forced to care for. With his new brother, Robbie, things start to take a great turn and Walker is finally happy and confident with his life. But things change quickly for a foster child, and when he is pulled away from the family he loves, will the love and guidance they gave him remain? Or will he turn into someone they might just be ashamed to call their own as he journeys through an entirely different world than the one he was brought up in?

The Healing of Windwalker is full of adventure and there are a lot of interesting characters. It’s told from the point of view of the young boy, going through everything himself and trying to understand what it means, and how he’s going to survive. But there’s also some interesting points from other side of the story and it’s really good to read. This is an excellent depiction of what a foster child can go through and especially a child who belongs to an entirely different culture, one that’s interested in keeping those children to itself, no matter what the cost may be. The Healing of Windwalker by Donald Chadd is definitely a story for those who have run into some bad times and want to come out on the other side stronger than ever.
