There is an air balloon flying around in your neighborhood, but would you qualify to fly in it? There is only one qualification; you must have done a good deed. The Good Deed Balloon by Bat Oren with illustrations by Yonat Katzir is a beautifully illustrated children’s book about charity and having a giving spirit. This book is ideal as a starter book for children learning to read. The simple words, storyline, and colorful pictures will entice a child to want to engage with the story. As the story unfolds, animals and humans hear about the Good Deed Balloon and begin to line up to take a ride. As each one approaches the front of the line, a voice asks, "What good deed have you done?" Based upon the answer, the voice decides if the deed is good enough for admittance into the balloon. Some are accepted, based upon their answers, while others are rejected. Those that are rejected walk away somewhat puzzled by this, because they truly believed that they performed a good deed.
Even though it may be a simple feat, a lot of people do not care for one another like they should. I loved reading The Good Deed Balloon because I envisioned reading it to a group of children just before their nap time. The Good Deed Balloon is the type of story that every child needs to read. The simple act of doing a great deed, and learning what constitutes and does not constitute a great deed, is a wonderful lesson within itself that children can appreciate. So I hope that the next time the Good Deed Balloon flies around in your neighborhood that you and your children will be granted a ride.
