The Glovemaker’s War, by Katherine Williams, relates a heartwarming yet heartbreaking story of three generations of women who will learn much about themselves as well as each other. Eve, Angela, and Georgina are mother, daughter, and granddaughter, each with their own very independent successful lives, and multiple secrets. Eve is elderly and very ill. She wants her daughter, Angela, to come to England to stay with her. However, Angela, who has never had time for family is in Greece on a cruise. Georgina is called to travel over to the UK to take care of her Grandy. Georgina has some memories of her Grandy from when she was young, but ‘family’ was not something that was encouraged. After her relationship with Marco ends abruptly, Georgina leaves the States for England. Eve and Georgina connect and become fast friends. It’s because of this friendship that Eve feels it is time to finally break her silence and tell Georgie why she had to sign the SOE during the war and why she left England in 1943 to work for the French Resistance as a courier. She went as a glovemaker and joined her uncle’s business in Grenoble, France. She and her friend Sylvie sent radio messages to the Allies and delivered vital messages to the Resistance. It is here she meets and falls deeply in love with Luc... After seventy-three years of keeping secrets, how will Angela and Georgina react?

The Glovemaker’s War by Katherine Williams is a beautiful story of enduring love, dedication to one’s country, and soul mates. This book has an incredible storyline that is easily followed because it flows so well. The plot covers aspects of life, love, and war which most of our families have been touched by at some point in our lives. Williams provides exceptional details in her work as the reader travels with Eve into the mountains to see Luc and deliver messages to the French Resistance. Williams creates intriguing family dynamic drama by Angela being estranged from Eve, and not truly being part of Georgina’s life either. However, as Eve tells her story to Georgie, the pain, suffering, dedication, isolation, and heartbreak all come pouring out. Williams has created true-to-life characters. As you read The Glovemaker’s War, you will feel what these three women have felt. You will travel the French roads down which Eve pedaled her bicycle, and feel the compassion and love grow between grandmother and granddaughter. This book is a true blessing to the strength and courage of women, especially those who fought for freedom during World War II. I highly recommend The Glovemaker’s War and look forward to reading more from this author.

I really enjoyed reading this fascinating book and like others I couldn't put it down. It is very well researched and beautifully written. I also learnt a lot more than I knew before about the Resistance and their brave work.
