I hadn't had the pleasure of reading the first book in the series, but after reading The Forgotten Secret, I'm definitely going to backtrack just to get on the same level as the characters! To put it short and sweet: I know what books I'm going to start my niece and nephew on for Christmas. The Forgotten Secret picks up, apparently, right where the first book ends. Trip is presenting his findings on Gasparilla's Treasure to the University of Florida in a huge lecture hall to share what he and his friends found with the world. Trip then gets introduced to the renowned adventurer Juan Gonzales and they, along with returning friends Josh and Sara, head off on another adventure to unite the Triumvirate. You would think they had all gotten enough of legendary mystical objects, but no, they now must bring together three relics from the past to create the Triumvirate, which will give the one who possesses it unimaginable power.
One of the best things about Scott Clement's writing style is that despite writing for a younger audience the language used is very adult and sophisticated. Too often do I see young adult and children's literature written with babyish, immature prose and language. Kids, tweens, and teens are smart. They don't need their literature to be "dumbed down" so that they can understand it. Scott knows how to keep the plot lines and characters on a tween level, while still maintaining a lovely turn of prose, and descriptive passages which are eloquent and beautiful.
