The Farmer in the Dell Murder: An Arch Grant Cape Hatteras Mystery by Bill Husztek is a story that features murder and police investigation, a murder that could be insignificant in location but that quickly escalates into a national crisis, in a political setting with powerful undercurrents of the Cold War. A part time Deputy Sheriff of Hatteras County, a man with many troubles in his personal life, including his dysfunctional marriage and poor health, is suddenly called by his boss to investigate the report on a missing person along the Alligator River. The investigation of the murder of one of the notable citizens in Hatteras will take him to places he never could have imagined, including the US Air Force and the FBI. Be ready for a great read in murder, mystery, and political intrigue.
Bill Husztek’s novel is a gripping story, an edge-of-the-seat tale with stunning turns and surprises. It has a slow beginning which can deceptively lead readers to think it could be just another boring tale, but the pace picks up pretty fast as the reader gets acquainted with the cast of compelling characters. I enjoyed the way the author develops the stream of consciousness throughout the story, getting readers right into the inner workings of the minds of his characters. The characters are fleshed out, developed with sufficient background story to leave the reader with the feeling they really know the characters. The themes of murder, political intrigue, and women come across in the writing with clarity. Arch Grant is one of the characters that readers will stay with long after their adventure with him in this novel is over. The Farmer in the Dell Murder: An Arch Grant Cape Hatteras Mystery thrills and entertains immensely.
