The Event (Creek Water series Book 1) by Whitney Dineen is an entertaining rom-com that has all the flair of a Hallmark movie. Emmeline Anne Frothingham moved to New York to escape the catty group led by Cootie Wilcox and to prove to everyone that she can take care of herself. However, a one night stand puts a spanner in the works. Emmie must return to Creek Water, her tail tucked between her legs. She’s an unmarried mother and Cootie is unwilling to let her forget that. Enter Zachary Grant, the most eligible bachelor in town who seems to blow hot then cold every other day. Can Emmie let herself develop feelings for Zac, especially when she carries an embarrassing secret that could destroy whatever is left of her reputation in town and, worse, in Zac’s eyes?
In The Event, we have a clash of small-town ideals and younger generational values. Whitney Dineen takes small-town drama to the next level. With plenty of hilarious scenes sprinkled throughout, you’re guaranteed many belly-aching laughs. I loved Emmie’s family. They were just too much. Matchmakers, gossips(the good kind), fighters for the ones they love and a close-knit group. Anyone would wish to have them at their back. As for Zac and Emmie, they were just so adorable. The fact that Emmie couldn’t hold her tequila to save her life means she couldn’t remember the man who impregnated her with his lethal swimmers during The Event and this makes their relationship all the more deliciously complicated. On a serious note, the author addresses the damage gossip and hatred can do to a society. I really enjoyed reading this book and will definitely be looking out for more funny, scandalously outrageous romance from this author.
