The Eighth: Intro to the Alt-World Chronicles by Sunshine Somerville introduces us to a fantasy world portraying a harrowing battle between good and evil forces. King Owen leads his men against the invading attacks of different kinds of cruel creatures, thus protecting unsuspecting humankind. In order to help him, he has summoned the current alterni from out of his world, a young girl called Esme, who has been trained in magic and is able to banish the evil creatures. But Esme can sense that the following attack will be even more terrible than the previous ones and that she will die in it. Nevertheless, she bravely participates in the endeavor. Will she survive? What will happen to King Owen’s enterprise? Will good ultimately prevail over evil in this world?
Remarkably well written, The Eighth: Intro to the Alt-World Chronicles by Sunshine Somerville readily transports us to a fast-paced scene of a battle where the protagonists seem to be on the losing end. We sympathize with young Esme, a recently trained magician weary of everything she has been through, who enters the battle with the premonition of her own impending death. Likewise, we empathize with the other protagonist, King Owen, who endures the burden of leadership under overwhelming circumstances. Both characters have great depth and power to intrigue the reader. At the end of this introductory book, the author very originally and with great skill provides us with an understanding of Esme’s actions and ultimate fate, one that will make readers crave more of this outstanding and exciting fantasy tale.
