Promises are meant to be kept, it doesn’t pay to lie, and don’t be greedy. Sage words of wisdom that only a good fairy tale can illustrate. Three retellings of popular classic fairy tales, The Frog Prince, The Woodcutter and the Mermaid, and Three Billy Goats Gruff, provide young readers with sage wisdom on important life lessons. Princess Moy Moy is distraught when she loses her golden ball in the well. When a frog offers to retrieve it provided she promises three things, the princess agrees. Only, when the frog appears to claim the promises, she thinks it’s rather gross to share her table, her food, her drink, and her pillow. When reminded that she promised, she gives in and is well rewarded for keeping her promises. Prince Moy Moy knows and respects the value and integrity of a promise.
Samuel Valentino’s picture book story, The Early Readers’ Fairy Tale Collection, is a clever retelling of three classic fairy tales. Each story is told simply, using simple language to help a young reader learn to read along. The colorful illustrations help carry each story and the placement of the text and illustrations on each page give the book a graphic book appearance. The moral lessons taught by these tales are important for readers young and old and the creative presentation encourages young readers to be resilient in their approach to everything they do in life. The author stresses the importance of team work, caring for others, making sure you don’t lie, keep your promises, and don't be greedy. Beautifully presented.
