The Duke’s Daughter, by Jodie Leigh Murray, is a historical romance novel telling the story of Evie, who has spent her life hidden by choice or is imprisoned and beaten by the earl, her father. Evie believed her life could not get much worse. Evie learns the depth of her father’s hatred when she is removed from the estate by Thane, an assassin who would rather keep Evie for himself. Xander enters Evie’s life when he saves her from Thane. But is she safe? Who can she trust? Although, never far from Xander’s sight, Evie struggles to find her place while she constantly repeats that she will never marry. But she is faced with a difficult decision between her life-long mantra and the love that is building in her heart. Evie decides to escape and make her way to London to plead her case in front of the new king, William. What Evie faces changes her life drastically and leaves her wanting the simple things in life; her family, friends, and raising her little brother, Tovi, as the new lord of the manor. Xander and King William have other plans, but in the end, does any of it matter when love is involved?
The reader will become completely lost in medieval England and find themselves captured heart and soul by every part of the character development in the book. Jodie Leigh Murray has penned a masterpiece story of a girl who wants to live on her terms but learns concessions at times must be made. The Duke’s Daughter is a romantic historical novel that is brought to life by the author. The story development is seamless and smooth and introduces each new segment skillfully to hold the readers’ attention. It is the same with the introduction of every new character. I was able to visualize the characters as they would be in real life, which is truly an art form. The Duke’s Daughter is a brilliant novel that I truly enjoyed, and I look forward to reading more from this author. A great book!
