The story of The Dragon Egg That Rolled Away by Ben L. Hughes starts one sunny day when one of the eggs - on the hill where it is to hatch - slips from the batch and rolls down the hill. The dragon inside is thrilled, but he realizes that he is out of sight of all his kin. He wants to escape but since the shell is thick, he is unable to break it. His mother would have saved him if she saw him going down the hill, but now she is cannot hear his yells. Will the dragon be saved? Will he be able to get out of the shell? Read the story to find out more!

The story has good messages for young readers, that of kindness, selflessness, and friendship, depicted beautifully through the characters of Mama dragon, baby dragon, and Flynn, the raven. The paintings are bright and colorful and they will captivate readers. The messages make it an ideal story for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries, and parents and grandparents can use it for bedtime story-telling. The rhyme scheme gives the story a lyrical quality and children will fall in love with the baby dragon as he tries to find his way back home. Flynn’s character represents kindness, selflessness, and helping at a time when it is needed the most, and this is palpable to readers. Stories with messages are always good for children and they understand clearly when these are narrated through stories and pictures.
